Place Story Part 2 Coming Soon !

PLACE STORIES 1.0

Theme - Exploring Memory in Places

All places have stories and stories are a powerful medium to elicit emotional responses. They have an ability to reinvent a place and a community, and reimagine the perception of three dimensional spaces to an active, fluid, dynamic interconnected habitat.

We invite entries from young professionals, students and researchers from across the disciplines of architecture, design, planning and other urban environment related fields such as urban geography, anthropology, social and environmental sciences, humanities, arts and the crafts, to tell us their Place Stories. We challenge them to create a narration which helps people fall in love with the place, or jolts them to reality, or simply takes them into a dimension of surreal experience. The theme this year for Place Stories 1.0 is Memory in Places.

The Place Stories 1.0 sessions shall be conducted online. The Storyteller for each session would be given 20 minutes for the talk followed by a 20 minutes discussion with the Anchor and a subject Expert. There will be opportunities for the audience to interact, comment, share, exchange ideas and experiences with the speakers. The aim shall be to include the audience as active participants in building the narrative on the future of places in cities.

WHAT’S YOUR STORY!

Inviting Storytellers from Diverse Disciplines

Places selected for talks by the Storytellers can be either contemporary or historic all existing in the public realm such as streets and transit spaces; squares, markets, community spaces; gardens, parks and open spaces; water bodies, waterfronts or spaces associated with water structures such as wells, step wells, tanks, etc. The idea is not to be limited to just well-known places but extend the conversation to those public places that are essential building blocks of cities, give the city its character, are part of daily lives of people and promote wholesome community living.

The Storytellers through their narration should explore the multiple facets of a place that give the place its character, identity and meaning and attempt to probe the following questions:

  • How are people, places and memories connected?
  • What are the memories, meanings and community narratives associated with places?
  • How people engage and interact with places and establish linkages with them?
  • How places influence people and their thought processes?
  • How people collectively shape places?
  • What are the material and non-material characteristics of a place that embody memories?
  • How do manmade and natural elements that constitute a place acquire meaning and become tangible carriers of intangible memories?
  • In what ways does the place contribute to wholesome community living?
  • What are the transformation processes that impact the bond between people, places and memories?
